What is the Colour Sage Green?

Sage green is everywhere right now – in paint colours, on social media, in soft furnishings and bathroom accessories. But “green” covers a huge amount of ground, and sage in particular has a quality that makes it hard to define just by looking at a colour chart. Here’s what it actually is and why it works so well.

Sage green is a muted, grey-green

The name comes from the herb – specifically the grey-green colour of dried sage leaves. It’s not the vivid green of fresh grass or the dark depth of forest green. It’s softer and more complex than either. Sage has notes of grey and, depending on the specific shade, can lean slightly blue or slightly yellow-green. The hex code for a classic sage sits around #87AE73 to #9CAF88, though you’ll see significant variation in products labelled “sage”.

How sage green compares to similar shades

Olive is darker and more yellow-brown than sage. If sage is a late spring morning, olive is an autumn afternoon.

Mint is lighter and much cooler than sage – it has a strong blue-green quality that sage largely avoids.

Duck egg is more blue and softer than sage, sitting in a different part of the green-blue spectrum entirely.

Pistachio is lighter and more yellow-green than sage, with less of the grey that gives sage its sophisticated, muted quality.

Why sage green works so well in the home

It pairs especially well with:

  • Warm neutrals like cream, linen and oatmeal
  • Natural wood tones – pale oak and sage is a classic combination right now
  • Terracotta and burnt orange, for a warmer, earthy palette
  • White and off-white, which let the sage read clearly without competition
  • Dusty pinks and blush, for a softer, more romantic feel

Using sage green in your home

Because sage is muted rather than vivid, it works on larger surfaces without overwhelming a room. Cushions, throws and bedding in sage sit quietly alongside almost any existing scheme. In the bathroom, sage-toned bath mats and towels give a fresh, spa-like feel without requiring a full refit.
