What is a Throw Blanket? How It Differs from a Regular Blanket

The word “throw” is used pretty loosely in home interiors. Sometimes it means a blanket. Sometimes it means something much lighter. Here’s the actual difference.

What makes a throw a throw

A throw is a smaller, lighter blanket – typically around 125x150cm to 130x170cm – designed to be draped over a sofa, armchair or bed rather than used as a bed covering on its own. The name comes from the way you use it: you throw it over something.

Material matters

Cotton throws are breathable and easy to wash – good for year-round use. Faux fur and fleece throws are significantly warmer – better for winter and for anyone who’s perpetually cold. Woven or knitted throws add texture and work well as a design element even when you’re not using them for warmth.
