How to Style Cushions on a Sofa

There is no single correct answer here, which is both the good news and the mildly infuriating news. But there are some principles that make the difference between a sofa that looks considered and one that looks like the cushions just landed there.

Start with an odd number

Three or five cushions almost always look better than two or four. Even numbers tend to feel symmetrical and a bit stiff – odd numbers feel more relaxed and natural. A three-cushion arrangement (two at the back, one leaning in front) is the classic starting point and it works for a reason.

Mix sizes, not chaos

Vary the sizes: larger cushions (50x50cm or 55x55cm) at the back, smaller ones (45x45cm or a rectangular lumbar cushion) in front. The layering creates depth and interest.

Think about the rule of three for pattern

One plain, one pattern, one texture. The plain cushion anchors the group. The pattern adds interest. The texture – think velvet, faux fur, or a chunky knit – adds warmth and tactility.

Colour doesn’t have to match – it just has to relate

Cushions don’t need to be the same colour as your sofa. They just need to relate to something in the room – whether that’s picking up a tone from the rug, the curtains, or the wall. A little contrast is a good thing.
