How to Measure Curtains for Your Windows

You don’t want to have chosen your favourite style, size and shade, only to realise they don’t fit once you try to install them.  

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you accurately measure your windows for curtains.

Step 1: Gather your tools

Before you start measuring, get together what you’ll need. For example;

• Measuring tape- a metal tape measure gives better results.
• Notepad and pen- to record your measurements.
• Step ladder- if your windows are high, a step ladder will be helpful.

Step 2: Decide on the mounting style

The first decision to make is whether you want your curtains to be mounted inside or outside the window frame. Your choice will make a difference to your measurements.

Inside mount

Curtains are hung inside the window frame, creating a neat and streamlined look. This style is best for smaller windows or if you want to showcase the window trim.

Outside mount

An outside mount means that your curtains extend beyond the window frame. This option is ideal for making windows appear larger or for blocking light.

Step 3: Measure the width

For inside mount: Measure the width of the window at the top, middle and bottom. Use the narrowest measurement to make sure that the curtains fit snugly inside the frame.

For outside mount: Measure the width of the window and add 4-6 inches on each side. This extra width means that when the curtains are drawn, they’ll cover the window completely and overlap the walls slightly, giving better light control and privacy.

Step 4: Measure the height

For inside mount: Measure the height from the top of the inside of the frame to the window sill or to whatever length you want the curtains to hang to.

For outside mount: Measure from the point where you want the curtain pole to be installed (usually 4-6 inches above the window frame) down to your desired curtain length. For a traditional look, the curtains should end just above the floor. For a more dramatic effect, you can allow the curtains to puddle slightly on the floor.

Step 5: How full do you want them?

Curtains look best when they are fuller than the window. To get the right fullness to suit the style of your room, multiply the width of your window by 1.5 to 3, depending on how full you want the curtains to appear.

If you want a pretty standard look, twice the width of the window is generally recommended.

Step 6: Consider curtain length options

You don’t have to have the same curtain length for each room. Consider the window shape and size, the look you’re going for and the practicalities. For example, there’s no point in having your curtains puddling on the floor in the kitchen or too short to block light in a bedroom.
