How to Make Your Bedroom Oh-So Cosy

Some bedrooms just wrap around you the moment you walk in. Soft, warm, glowy, the sort of room you don’t want to leave on a cold morning. The good news is that kind of cosy is easy to create. And it doesn’t cost a fortune.

It really comes down to a few simple things: layers, warm colours, gentle lighting and a bit of texture. Here’s how to pull them together.

Start with the bed

The bed is the biggest thing in the room, so it does the most for that cosy feeling. Layer it up. Start with a lightly quilted bedspread over your duvet for a bit of soft weight, then add a throw folded across the foot and a couple of cushions.

Warm up your colours

Cool blues and stark whites can leave a room feeling a bit chilly. For cosy, lean into warmer, softer tones instead. Cream, oatmeal, soft greige and a gentle grey all feel calm and snug.

You don’t have to repaint to get there. A cream or soft grey bedspread and a few warm-toned cushions will shift the whole mood of the room.

Get the lighting right

Lighting is the thing most people get wrong. One big, bright ceiling light will kill a cosy mood stone dead every time.

Swap it for lots of little pools of warm light instead. A couple of lamps, a warm bulb rather than a cold white one, maybe a string of fairy lights or a candle or two. If you can add a dimmer, even better. It’s amazing how much softer a room feels the moment you turn the big light off.

Layer in texture

Cosy is as much about touch as it is about looks. The more soft, tactile layers you add, the more inviting the room feels underfoot and all around.

Think a chunky knit throw, a deep-pile rug, a floral or patterned bedspread for a bit of character and cushions in a mix of fabrics. Layering a smaller rug over a bigger one is a designer trick that instantly warms up a bare floor.

Cosy on a budget

Here’s the best bit. You really don’t need to spend much to transform a room. A new bedspread, a warm lamp and a soft rug will do more than a whole redecorate.
