How to Fit Roller Blinds: A Straightforward Guide

Fitting a roller blind is one of those jobs that looks fiddly and turns out to be surprisingly satisfying once it’s done. The whole thing, including measuring up, typically takes under half an hour.
Inside recess or outside recess?
Inside recess means the blind fits inside the window frame. It gives a clean, neat look. Your blind needs to be 1cm narrower than the internal width of the recess on each side to allow for brackets and smooth operation.
Outside recess means the blind fits outside and above the window frame. Better for light-blocking and good if your recess isn’t deep enough for an inside-fit blind. Add at least 5cm to the window width on each side and at least 10cm above the frame.
Step by step
Step 1: Mark bracket positions and use a spirit level to ensure they’re at the same height. A blind that’s even slightly off-level will roll at an angle.
Step 2: Drill at your marked points, insert wall plugs, and screw in the brackets firmly. Use cavity wall fixings if you’re going into plasterboard without a noggin.
Step 3: Fit the blind – push the pin end into the bracket first, then click or slide the chain end into position. Give it a test roll – it should travel smoothly and sit level.
