How to Dress a Sofa with Throws and Cushions
A sofa can be the most expensive thing in a room and still look a bit sad without the right finishing touches. The good news: throws and cushions are inexpensive, completely reversible, and one of the most effective ways to make a sofa look genuinely good.
The basic formula
Two or three cushions for a two-seater, three to five for a three-seater. Odd numbers tend to look more relaxed than even ones. Mix sizes – larger cushions at the back, smaller or rectangular ones in front. Mix textures too: velvet next to plain cotton next to something with a bit of embellishment works far better than three identical cushions lined up.
How to place a throw
- Draped over one arm – the most casual option, works brilliantly on sofas you actually use
- Folded across a seat cushion – reads as tidy without looking stiff
- Over the back – adds height and a layered look, best with a visually interesting throw
- Bunched in the corner – the most relaxed option, says “someone cosy lives here”
Getting the colours right
The cushions and throw don’t need to match each other perfectly, but they need to relate to the room. Pick up a tone from the rug, the curtains, or the walls. A bit of contrast and mixing is what makes it look real rather than a showroom.
