How to Decorate a Neutral Bedroom

Neutral gets a bad rap for being boring. Done well, it’s the opposite. A neutral bedroom is calm, restful and quietly grown-up, the sort of room that feels like a deep breath at the end of a long day.

The secret isn’t the colour, because there barely is one. It’s all about tone and texture. Here’s how to get it right.

Pick your neutral: warm or cool

Neutrals split into two families. Choosing your side keeps the whole room feeling pulled together.

Warm neutrals lean towards cream, oatmeal, taupe and greige. They feel cosy and inviting. Cool neutrals lean towards soft white, grey and silver. They feel crisp and serene.

There’s no wrong answer, it just sets the mood. A cream scheme feels snug and traditional, while a soft grey feels calm and contemporary.

Layer your tones so it doesn’t fall flat

This is the golden rule of neutral rooms. If everything is exactly the same shade, the room goes flat and lifeless. The fix is to layer several tones of your chosen neutral together.

Pile it on. A chunky knit throw, some soft linen, a bit of boucle, a jute rug, warm wood and a quilted bedspread all add interest you can feel as well as see. The more tactile layers you add, the richer and cosier the room becomes.

Add a soft accent if you fancy

A neutral room doesn’t have to be colour-free. A gentle accent keeps it from feeling too pared-back, as long as you keep it soft.
