How to Clean Vertical Blinds Without Taking Them Down

Vertical blinds are one of the most practical window coverings going – but they do collect dust, and most people put off cleaning them because they assume it means taking the whole thing apart. It doesn’t. Here’s how to do it properly without removing a single slat.

How often should you clean them?

A light dust every couple of weeks keeps most vertical blinds looking good. A deeper clean every few months – or whenever you notice staining or a build-up that dusting won’t shift – is usually enough for most households.

What you’ll need

• A microfibre cloth (or a clean sock – works surprisingly well)
• A vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment
• A bowl of warm water with a small drop of washing-up liquid
• A dry cloth for after

Step 1: Dust first

Close the slats so they’re flat and facing you. Starting at the top, run a vacuum with a soft brush attachment down each slat, working from top to bottom. If you don’t have a brush attachment, a dry microfibre cloth or a clean sock slipped over your hand works just as well – pinch each slat between two fingers and run your hand down it. Open the slats the other way and repeat on the back.

Step 2: Wipe down

Dampen your microfibre cloth with the warm soapy water – it should be damp, not wet. Wipe each slat from top to bottom in one smooth motion. Follow immediately with a dry cloth to stop water sitting on the fabric. Start from the end furthest from the door and work inward, so you’re not leaning across clean slats with a dusty cloth.

Step 3: Tackle stains

For marks that won’t shift with a wipe-down, dab (don’t rub) with a small amount of warm water and a drop of mild detergent. For older or trickier stains, lemon juice and fine salt dabbed gently onto the area can help lift them. Always test on a hidden slat first before going to town on a visible one.

PVC vs fabric slats

PVC slats are the most forgiving – they can be wiped down with a damp cloth quite freely and dry quickly. Avoid anything abrasive.

Fabric slats need a lighter touch. Use your cloth barely damp, don’t scrub, and make sure the room is well ventilated so they dry properly. Wet fabric slats left in a closed room can develop mould along the edges.

Tips to keep them cleaner for longer

• Dust regularly – it takes two minutes and means you rarely need a deep clean
• Keep windows closed on windy days in dusty or polluted areas
• If you cook nearby, wipe down monthly rather than quarterly
