How Often Should You Change Your Bed Sheets?

Most of us know we should change our sheets regularly. Fewer of us actually do it as often as we should. Here’s the honest answer on how often, and why it actually matters.

The answer most people don’t want

Once a week. That’s the recommendation from most sleep and hygiene experts. You spend roughly a third of your life in your bed, and during that time you shed skin cells, sweat, produce body oils and (if you have them) share the space with pets. All of that ends up in your sheets.

The realistic answer

Weekly isn’t always practical. A realistic target for most people is every one to two weeks, with a strict two-week maximum. If you shower before bed rather than in the morning, you can comfortably push to two weeks. If you sleep with a pet, sweat a lot at night, or have skin or allergy sensitivities, weekly is genuinely worth sticking to.
