Coverlets vs Bedspreads: What’s the Difference?

Bedspread, coverlet, quilt, throw. The words get thrown around as if they all mean the same thing. Half the time they’re used interchangeably.
They’re not quite the same though. Knowing the difference makes dressing your bed a lot easier.
So here’s the plain-English version, no jargon, just what each one actually is and when you’d reach for it.
What is a bedspread?
A bedspread is the big one. It’s a large, lightweight cover that sits over the whole bed and your duvet, hanging down the sides and over the foot. Some reach close to the floor. Traditional ones are cut long enough to tuck over the pillows too.
The job of a bedspread is to give you a neat, finished, properly dressed bed, with a bit of extra warmth on top. Ours are lightly quilted, so they add a soft, cosy weight without the bulk of a second duvet.
What is a coverlet?
A coverlet is the lighter, smaller cousin. It sits on top of the bed as a layer, either over the duvet or between the sheet and the duvet. It usually stops around the top of the mattress rather than hanging to the floor.
Think of it as a styling layer more than a full cover. It’s the piece you fold neatly across the foot of the bed or drape over one corner, adding texture and a little warmth. Coverlets are often quilted, which is where the confusion with bedspreads creeps in.
The main differences at a glance
| Bedspread | Coverlet | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | The whole bed, down to or near the floor | A top layer, stops around the mattress |
| Size | Large, sized to your bed plus the drop | Smaller, more like a blanket or quilt |
| Warmth | Light, for a finished look plus a touch of cosy | Light, mostly for layering and texture |
| Best for | A dressed bed that hides the duvet | A styled layer folded at the foot |
What about quilts, throws and comforters?
A quilt is much like a coverlet, but thicker, with an inner layer for warmth and that classic stitched pattern holding it together. A throw is smaller and more casual, the piece you sling over the end of the bed or the arm of the sofa. A comforter or duvet is the thick, filled one that does the actual keeping-you-warm.
The easy way to remember it: bedspreads and coverlets are about the look, quilts and duvets are about the warmth.
So which one do you need?
If you want a neat, finished bed that covers the duvet and hangs down the sides, go for a bedspread. If you just want a light layer to fold across the foot for a bit of texture, a coverlet is your friend. Still getting to grips with it all? Our guide on what a bedspread is actually used for is a handy read.
