What’s the Best Fabric for a Bedspread?

There’s no single best fabric for a bedspread. Anyone who tells you otherwise is fibbing. The right one depends on what you want from it, whether that’s cosy warmth, easy washing, a touch of luxury or a friendly price.

So here’s a quick, honest rundown of the main bedspread fabrics and which one suits which kind of bed.

Cotton

Cotton is the classic all-rounder. It’s soft, breathable and natural. It washes beautifully and feels lovely against the skin. That breathability makes it a great pick for warm sleepers or summer months.

The only real downside is that pure cotton can crease, so it’s not always the crispest-looking option. A little ironing or a good shake usually sorts it.

Cotton-rich and easy-care blends

Blending cotton with a bit of polyester gives you the best of both worlds. You keep the soft, cosy feel, but you gain durability, easy washing and colours that stay bright wash after wash. Blends also crease far less, so the bed looks neat with almost no effort.

This is where a lot of our bedspreads sit, because it’s hard to beat for everyday value and fuss-free living.

Quilted

Quilted isn’t a fabric exactly, it’s how the bedspread is made. Layers are stitched together, often in a patchwork of prints, which adds softness, a bit of cosy weight and lovely texture.

Our lightly quilted bedspreads give you that snuggly, made-up look while still being light enough to use all year round. They’re machine washable too, which is always a bonus.

Jacquard

Jacquard is where a bedspread feels a little more special. The pattern is woven into the fabric rather than printed on top, which gives it real depth and a subtle, elegant texture you can feel.

If you want something that looks a touch more luxurious without a luxury price tag, a jacquard design is the one. It dresses a bed beautifully.

Velvet and chenille

For pure plush, it’s hard to beat velvet or chenille. They’re soft, warm and a little bit glamorous, perfect for a cosy winter bedroom or a room you want to feel a bit indulgent.

They are heavier than cotton or a blend, so they suit colder months and grander beds more than a light summer refresh.

So which fabric is best for you?

For easy, everyday cosiness that washes well and lasts, a quilted cotton-rich blend is hard to beat. For a more elegant, dressed-up finish, reach for jacquard. And for pure warmth and a bit of glamour, velvet wins.

Our Eden jacquard and Cotswold cotton-rich patchwork sets show two lovely ends of that scale, one elegant, one soft and homely.

Whichever fabric you fancy, a soft cream or a bolder design, our full range of bedspreads lists the material on every product, right down to your double or king. Easy to compare, easy to choose. For a bit of inspiration, have a look at our five favourite decorative bedspreads.
